Canada … The Gentle Giant |
Large in land mass, small in population, Canada has a unique position in the world. Surrounded by three oceans and occupying much of North America, it contains some of the most spectacularly diverse landscape in the world. Mountain ranges, arctic tundra, desert badlands, verdant farmland and dynamic coastlines…Canada seems to have it all! And Canada's sophisticated urban centers rank among the world's top destinations, where visitors come for idyllic summer vacations as well as for exhilarating winter sports. |

| Geography and Climate |
Canada is the world's second largest country by total area after Russia, extending from the Pacific Ocean to the Atlantic and to the Arctic Ocean in the north. The land mass of Canada is divided into 10 provinces (British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario, Quebec, Newfoundland and Labrador, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island) and three territories (the Northwest Territory, Nunavut and Yukon).
Traveling across this great country reveals a landscape of huge variety and majesty as the Rocky Mountains on the Pacific coast of British Columbia give way to the broad, flat Canadian Prairies of the western provinces (Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba). The provinces of Ontario and Quebec are built on the massive Canadian Shield, an area of glacially scoured rock, rich in minerals and possessing a vast amount of rivers and lakes. Canada has more lakes than any other country and holds a huge portion of the world's fresh water. Flowing from Ontario to Quebec, the world's largest estuary, the Saint Lawrence River system, is fed by the Great Lakes and includes Niagara Falls, one of the world's most impressive waterfalls. The beautiful Maritime Provinces (Newfoundland/Labrador, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and P.E.I.) feature the rugged, rocky shoreline of the Atlantic Ocean and include the gentle Annapolis Mountains and the Bay of Fundy.
Traveling north, the landscape offers an entirely different journey through the great boreal forest and across the tundra to the barren beauty of the Arctic archipelago, which includes some of the world's largest islands. |

History and Government |
Canada has always been a wild and mysterious land for those who dare to settle it. It became home to Canada's first nations almost 10,000 years ago. It wasn't until much later that Europeans first set foot on these fertile shores when the Vikings sailed across the Atlantic Ocean.
The next wave of exploration was lead first by the English in 1497 and then by the French in 1534. The first permanent European settlements were established around 1605 by French colonists. The English established their own settlements in Ontario and parts of the Maritimes, lured bythe vast wealth promised by the fur and lumber trade.
However, Canada did not join together as a country until Confederation in 1867, creating a constitutional monarchy within the British Commonwealth. Today the strong French and English components of Canada still debate over rights and privileges.
Canada is governed as a parliamentary democracy with strong, self-governing provincial parliaments operating under a central federal government. The head of the federal government is the Prime Minister who is formally appointed by the Governor General (the Queen's representative in Canada) after a general election process that occurs at least every five years. |
Economy |
Canada is one of the world's wealthiest nations with an economy driven by the service industry and Canada's vast agricultural and mineral exports. It is one of the few developed nations that is a net exporter of energy (natural gas, hydroelectric power and oil). Canada has a strong trade relationship with the United States, reinforced by a shared border and a free trade agreement that also includes Mexico. The Canadian economy remains highly dependent on international trade.
Canada has been enjoying a decade of high economic growth and low unemployment, with the federal government posting annual budget surpluses. |
Demographics |
Canada is a diverse nation of approximately 32 million people, with a welcoming immigration policy that has created an unparalleled mosaic of colourful cultures as Canada encourages its people to preserve and celebrate their heritage.
The population has increased by 5.4% in the last five years primarily due to immigration. Canada has the highest per capita immigration rate in the world. Some of the major ethnic groups represented are: British (47.1%), French (15.8%), German (9.3%), Italian (4.3%) and Chinese (3.7%). Most of the population lives in large urban centres within 160 km of the U.S. border. |

Language |
Canada has two official languages: French and English. French is mainly spoken in Quebec though there are large French speaking areas throughout Canada. |
